Eastern and Western Portals of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project
System Installed:
Overview
The Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA) was charged with the construction of the Eastern and Western Portals of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project. Given both portals proximity to existing rail assets and the need to excavate, designers required the installation of inclinometers to provide data on expected ground movement.
To consolidate the budgetary requirements of the project and minimise the cost of long term monitoring, Geomotion was able to supply both In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a manual inclinometer probe. This meant that more sensitive areas could be managed in near real-time via a wireless system and less sensitive areas could be monitored manually via a less rigorous schedule.
Results
The benefits of the wireless system installed, meant cables that are vulnerable to physical damage were removed and the installation was able to adapt to a construction site which is constantly changing, minimise safety hazards and personal on site. Challenges were experienced when trying to share resources across two sites separated by 9km.
Geomotion’s ISO accredited systems ensured good record keeping and standardised execution of all installations.
